What Does a 240-Volt Circuit Cost in Los Angeles? (2026)

Market ranges and code facts reviewed .

Adding a 240-volt outlet or a dedicated circuit in Los Angeles typically costs $250 to $900 when the panel has room and the run is short, based on HomeGuide's 2026 national figures; a NEMA 14-50 outlet runs $300 to $600 in Los Angeles-area guides. A garage subpanel is about $848 to $1,695 installed by one Los Angeles cost calculator, and a full panel upgrade $2,500 to $4,500. VoltGen Energy's advice: Los Angeles labor rates, long runs, finished walls and a full panel are what push a quote above those ranges.

How much do outlets, dedicated circuits and subpanels cost?

The lowest range applies to a straightforward circuit, not every appliance or garage project. A dedicated circuit serves a particular appliance or load. It may be 120 or 240 volts, and it may end at a receptacle or a hardwired connection.

These are typical market ranges, not our prices.

For an induction range, dryer, heat pump water heater or workshop tool, the dedicated-circuit range is a starting point, not an appliance-specific quote. The exact model and installation route matter. Do not assume that a subpanel price includes every branch circuit, receptacle, trench or wall repair you want.

The outlet-only EV figure is also narrower than a complete charger installation. Compare that scope with our EV charger installation cost guide before using it as a project budget.

What pushes a project into a higher price tier?

Panel room and wiring access are the best starting points for sorting quotes. Use these tiers to identify the work behind the price rather than treating every new outlet as the same job.

Panel has room and the run is short. This is the best match for HomeGuide's $250 to $800 national outlet range. Ask whether the quote includes the breaker, wiring, box, receptacle and final connection. A nearby panel helps only if it can accept the proposed circuit.

The run is long or walls are finished. Longer runs add cost: HomeGuide's 2026 national figures put new wire at about $7 to $10 per linear foot. Ask how the contractor measures the route and which wiring is already included in the base price. The actual path may travel through an attic or around obstructions rather than follow the straight-line distance.

Older plaster houses, finished walls, hillside access and hard parking push quotes toward the top of a range. Ask whether surface conduit is an option and whether patching and painting are included. A lower electrical quote may leave those repairs to someone else.

The panel is full. A subpanel may provide space for additional circuits when the existing service has sufficient capacity. This changes the job from adding a branch circuit to installing a feeder and another panel, plus the circuits it will serve.

The service lacks capacity. The scope may shift to a main panel or service upgrade. The $2,500 to $4,500 Los Angeles benchmark above is specifically for a 100A to 200A main panel upgrade, not a promise that every service alteration fits that range.

The garage is detached and trenching is involved. HomeGuide's 2026 national figures put trenching at $6.00 to $13.50 per foot. Ask separately about excavation, the wiring route and surface restoration. The detached-garage EV benchmark in the table is context for that type of project, not a general garage-subpanel price.

When do I need a subpanel instead of a panel upgrade?

A subpanel adds circuit spaces, but it does not increase the capacity of your electrical service. That distinction should be clear before you approve either option.

A garage subpanel can be worth considering when you want several loads in the same area, such as a workshop tool, an EV charger and other garage equipment. Ask for a comparison between separate circuit runs and a feeder supplying a local subpanel. Neither layout is automatically cheaper for every house.

A full panel and an overloaded service are different problems. Empty breaker spaces do not prove that the service can support another appliance. Likewise, a full breaker layout does not by itself establish that the service must be upgraded.

Ask the contractor to explain whether the recommendation addresses circuit space, electrical capacity, equipment condition or future plans. For a larger project, review panel upgrades and the panel upgrade cost guide so you can compare the proposed scope with the right benchmark.

What do the code and permit rules require?

The California Electrical Code, based on the NEC, governs circuit sizing and capacity checks. The 2025 edition, based on the 2023 NEC, took effect January 1, 2026.

A load calculation under California Electrical Code Article 220 shows whether the service has room before anything is added. Every 240-volt appliance circuit is sized from the appliance nameplate and installation manual. Give the contractor the exact induction range, dryer, heat pump water heater or tool model rather than just the appliance category.

A household electric dryer is figured at no less than 5,000 watts in the load calculation under Section 220.54 and usually uses a 30-amp circuit. That load-calculation figure is not a substitute for checking the appliance instructions.

Attached garages need at least one 120-volt, 20-amp circuit for garage receptacles under Section 210.11(C)(4). Garage and outdoor receptacles need GFCI protection under Section 210.8. A subpanel keeps neutrals and grounds separate; only the main service bonds them. A detached garage supplied by a feeder needs its own disconnect and grounding electrode at that building under Sections 225.31 and 250.32.

New circuits are permitted work. Inside the City of Los Angeles, including Studio City, the authority is LADBS. For Burbank, Glendale or Pasadena, use the city's Building and Safety department.

HomeGuide's 2026 national figures list electrical permits at $50 to $350 and inspection at $100 to $250. City fees vary, so check your city's fee schedule. Ask whether the quote includes those items and how inspection charges are handled rather than automatically adding both ranges to an installed price. Your inspector has the final say.

What should a written quote include?

A useful quote describes the finished installation, not just "add circuit." Ask for enough detail to compare proposals on the same basis:

  • The appliance model, circuit rating and receptacle type or hardwired connection.
  • The wiring route and how added distance will be priced.
  • The panel work included and the reason for any proposed subpanel or upgrade.
  • Conduit, trenching, access openings and surface restoration.
  • Permit handling, inspections and any exclusions.
  • Who supplies the appliance or charger and who completes its connection.

For an older home, also ask what happens if concealed wiring or access problems change the scope. The quote should explain how additional work is documented and approved. Share likely future garage or remodel plans now so the contractor can discuss options without assuming you want every possible upgrade.

Frequently asked questions

Can an existing 120-volt outlet be converted to 240 volts?

Sometimes, but do not assume it is a receptacle swap. HomeGuide's 2026 national figures put conversion at $250 to $800, about the same as a new 240-volt outlet. Have the existing wiring and intended appliance evaluated before budgeting for reuse.

Does a dedicated circuit always mean 240 volts?

No, a dedicated circuit can be 120 or 240 volts. It describes a circuit serving a particular appliance or load, not the voltage. Use the equipment's exact model when requesting a quote.

Will a garage subpanel make charging or tools more powerful?

Not by itself. A subpanel distributes the power available to it and provides circuit spaces. Ask what loads the proposed installation can support together rather than judging it only by the panel's amp rating.

Why is my quote above the national range?

Los Angeles labor rates often put local quotes above national figures. Finished walls, plaster repair, difficult access and longer routes can also change the scope. Ask for the difference to be explained in work items rather than assuming the national benchmark is a ceiling.
